“Danger is Real, Fear is a Choice”
Thanks to Nuffnang, we are in treat with a new release by Will Smith’s “After Earth”. It is debut as another father / son collaboration after the movie, “The Pursuit of Happiness”, Will and Jaden Smith tag team in this dystopian future where earth is no longer habitable which forced mankind to source another sustainable eco-system. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan who had previously brought, The Sixth Sense, The Happening and The Last Airbender, “After Earth” is set to thrill audience with the surreal scenario (Excluding the fancy gadgets) and the test of willpower.
1000 years have passed since man’s great migration from Earth as the pollution had risen to a level inhabitable for mankind and they found another sustainable planet called Nova Prime which is lead by the Ranger Corps. While adapting to the new environment, a new threat emerges in the form of the aliens called S’krell whom unleashed their secret weapon that they bred, a blind but deadly creatures called Ursa (Oh ya, for some might think its the Ursa Warrior with the Fury Swipes, this beast is horribly deformed fugly.) against the human. This creature is lured by pheromone secreted during times of great distress, fear to be precise. Among all, rise a Ranger called Cypher Raige whom learned to suppress his fear, a technique called ‘Ghosting’ which later would be taught to Ranger in the Ranger Corps.
Even though the battle was won but it came with huge sacrifices as Cypher’s daughter, Senshi was caught in the onslaught which left his only son, Kitai. Since then, he is estranged from Kitai as his strong sense of conviction towards his duties. Kitai, whom still blamed himself over his sister death, had managed to secure a place in the Ranger Corps but unable to advance from cadet. Persuaded by his wife, Faia, Cypher brought along Kitai for a training exercise on a distant planet called Iphitoh. They have also brought along an unhatched Ursa for the training exercise.
However during their flight en route, the space shuttle is trapped in asteroid shower and left with no choice, they space jumped into another set of coordinates which brought them to Earth (Now classified as Class 1 – Quarantine Planet). During the re-entry into the atmosphere and with no power to sustain flight controls, the tail section had broken off and leaving the cockpit, they crash landed on the planet. Both Cypher and Kitai survived the crash but Cypher is gravely injured and requires immediate medical attention.
Stranded with the damaged emergency distress beacon, Kitai sets out to locate another beacon which is located at the tail section that broke off. As he ventures into the wilderness, many perils and dangers awaits him, including the training package that might have survived the impact of the crash.
With little resources and time left, Kitai must summon all his wits and courage to pull through, for both Cypher and his sake.
This is heart-warming to see father and son coming together in movie. It would difficult to establish a career without certain sacrifice to achieve success but Will had manage to groom Jaden though Jaden might need more exposure in terms of portraying certain emotion which he can been seen as quite stiff, and maintaining the family bond as the movie is produced by Will Smith’s production company, Overbrook Production. The movie itself is remarkable however several loose end that prompts certain question. The technology depict in the movie is great which one would hope that it could be applicable for real life application. Well till the next collaboration or solo flight movie review, take care
